Like their relatives the watersnakes, garter snakes will often thrash around when picked up and expel a strong-smelling musk from scent glands at the base of the tail. Garter snakes have rough (keeled) scales. The ground color may be yellow with orange blotches out- lined in black along the back and sides. The color of these stripes can be black, brown, or even olive. It may be mistaken for NJs timber rattlesnake. It has four dark stripes running down the length of its body. Habitats include swamps, marshes, and floodplains next to rivers. The yellow rat snake is bright to dark yellow, though in some regions it can look more orange. Habitat: This species only lives near water sources where crayfish are abundant. The black or dark brown color of the snake is often extremely glossy. Scientific name: Thamnophis sirtalis annectens. They live mostly in the southeastern part of the state. It will often have two rows of black spots running the length of its greenish or yellowish belly. Much variability in coloration exists in the common garter snake but the best identifying characteristic is a stripe down the middle of the snakes back. Butler’s garter snake is one of the smallest garter snakes found in Wisconsin. On its side, the garter snake usually has a checkerboard pattern of dark squares and stripes. Description: The eastern garter snake has a variable color pattern, but may be identified by a yellow or white stripe running down the middle of its dark back-resembling the “garters” used to hold up socks.
